Katy: Okay, dad. I'll be in your corner for the dance-off. Adam: Clayton thinks he can beat me. No way! Katy: Focus on the dance, dad. Don't let him distract you. Adam: Never. I've got my eyes on the prize. (sniff.) What's that smell? Is that coffee? Did someone put a pot on? Katy: Focus! They're trying to get in your head! You've gone to your trump card too soon!

Susan001: As a caffeine addict I can say yes you can. The first day without caffeine my skin feels like it’s on too tight. The second day the shakes start. I will admit, thankfully, that the withdrawal symptoms from caffeine are nowhere near as severe as from the other drugs and it is much easier to control the cravings - you can fairly easily not have your daily dose. The body does develop a dependency - for example, I cannot sleep unless I have had my usual daily caffeine intake (which is the opposite of what you would expect). On the other hand, the side effects of addiction are minimal and it is very readily available at a reasonable cost so I will never have to turn to a life of crime to support my habit.
Unfortunately I don’t like coffee (sorry Doc Toon) so I have to take my daily hits in Coke (the liquid not the powder). I think the side and long term effects of the sugar are a lot worse than the effects of the caffeine.

I don’t have a HUGE coffee habit (a fair amount every morning, little or none after noon), but I notice if I don’t have it. If for some reason I don’t have any, around 10:00 or so I’l start feeling like something’s just not right, but it may not even OCCUR to me that my edginess is coffee-related. It doesn’t manifest as a specific craving for what my body didn’t get. Whereas, if I want a smoke and can’t have one, all I can think about is “cigarette cigarette cigarette cigarette…” until I get a chance to light up.
