There is a story that one of Queen Victoria’s counselors drew the short straw and had to brief her about Oscar Wilde’s crimes. He said that Wilde was being prosecuted for “enlarging the circles of his friends”.

Yeah, as if Wilde was the only dude in Victorian England who batted that way. Apologies to Vickie, but I guess Saucy Jack was the kind of “gay blade” the Royals preferred….

    Wilde was merely insufficiently discreet.

Apparently everyone knows the boy is gay except Veronica, which gives Jughead much joy, having been abused by her in the past. But this is a huuuuuge deal for Archie Comics, which is, to say the least, conservative. I believe it was owned by a conservative Christian group for a while. And Wilde got screwed over by his aristocratic “friend,” who makes Veronica look like Mother Theresa. He threw Wilde to the wolves (and his father’s viciousness) without a second thought.

The only thing that surprises me is that it took them so long.
