Television: May Day! May Day!
Arlo: The distress call "May Day" is from the French phrase "M'aidez," meaning "Help me"!
Television: Help me! Help me!
Arlo: That would be a French pilot.
Ah, May Day memories! When I was in grade school, we dressed up and danced around the maypole, weaving pastel crepe-paper streamers around the pole in a pattern. One year I dressed as a Dutch girl, trying to wear a pair of wooden shoes my uncle had sent me. (It was during WWII.) I had to stand tiptoe in the shoes for the class photograph because they were way too small – Uncle Jack had forgotten about his wife’s family’s feet.Y’know, I’ll bet the teachers missed May Day when we had to scuttle it because the Communists had made a Big Item out of it.
All of the emergency calls used world-wide are French. In addition to Mayday there is Securite (a message relating to maritime safety) and Pan Pan (needing assistance but not yet an emergency). I think Adam lives in a permanent state of “Pan-Pan”.
Ken, Catman, and Varnes – You Mayed my day! I was afraid that was just too silly, and was very close to deleting it. I’m just glad I didn’t get booed! : )
