Conley has “Ø” on his pen? This pleases a Norwegian.

There is synthetic glycerin, as well as glycerin derived from plant oils, usually palm or soybean. It came up at work a while back when I was getting one of our cleaning products certified for use in Kosher and Halal food processing plants.

To me, too, it looks like Ø not ϕ.

    Darby’s swearing is quite €-pean!

I remember growing up how popular Jello was among kids. It was around 3rd grade that the rumors started as to what Jello was made from. When the rumors were confirmed, most of the kids I knew never touched the stuff again.

“Bugs” in your yogurt? You mean the “live and active cultures”? Which can be bacteria (which are neither plant nor animal!) or yeasts (a fungus!)And the milk in your yogurt (and cheese!) is certainly an animal product.

BY “Bugs” I think he meant that some red food coloring is actually ground up, treated beetle carapace.

By the way, Mr. Conolly, synthetic rennet exists, and is used in some products, some marshmallow companies use carageenan (seaweed extract) instead of animal collagen as the gelatin base that lets the marshmallows be “fluffy”. Vegetarian substitutes are available for many of the ingredients that have been made from animals in the past. I’m sure there are some vegetarian and vegan websites that can point you to them. Good Luck.

those bugs are in the yogurt by accident, unless they’re talking about the red dye that comes from beetle shells. But hey Rob, if you really don’t want to be a burden on the animal kingdom you can just kill yourself, I’m sure Bucky will take great delight in eating you

@puggles, that’s not at all how cow biology works. They make milk for the same reason human mothers do – because they’re pregnant. Dairy cows have to be kept pregnant 100% of the time, and most of the calves are taken from their mothers and killed as soon as they’re born. The reason they have milk to be taken is because the dairy farmer took their calf away and immediately re-inseminated them with another pregnancy.

I went to Wayback Burgers this week and they’re offering chocolate cricket powder in their shakes. Needless to say, I declined.

“Spotted Dick”. A traditional British dried fruit and suet pudding (“dick” being a common term for “pudding” in the 19th century here).

Honestly, you Americans are so uptight about anything that shares ANYTHING with a word you think is rude, I’m surprised you don’t stop using half the alphabet (just in case someone spells something inappropriate with it…)

Bottom line is this: There would be no ‘vegans’ on this planet if their ancestors had not been ‘animal by-product consumers’ of one type or another. Hunter-gatherers preceded the agro revolution that led to the production of beer, which likely inspired written language so the process and recipe could be recorded for posterity. And there are still vital nutrients that can only be acquired from animal sources, even in the current advanced state of human ‘evolution’.Elephants are ‘endangered’ in Africa, but not India or Thailand. Why is that?
