Jeez Louise, Jenny and I were talking about this at dinner! When was the last time anyone ever saw a man come to dinner party wearing a coat and tie? Or, God forbid, a dinner jacket! Do people even have dinner parties any more? Not burgers ‘n’ beer on the driveway, but dressed up, cocktails and conversation, followed by sit-down dinner in the dining room, followed by dessert, liqueurs, and more conversation. No TV! Maybe that’s just in old movies.I remember owning TWO dinner jackets and wearing one out. One was red and my dad loved to borrow it to go dancing. Do people do that any more either? Have I died and no one told me?
In the ACTUAL “Old Days” they’re pining for, the MAID would have been doing the dishes.….In our house, The Wild Boar does the dishes.I do the laundry (he’s not allowed to wash my stuff; I like my clothes to stay their original size & not wrinkled, faded, or melted by the dryer.)I understand my brothers have similar arrangements with their wives.
With my new pledge to be more clear if not more concise, Jenny reminds me that those who had the parties all had what we in the South call “help.” The 1% still do, everywhere. Sociologically, this means that while you are enjoying all that glamour and service, someone else is not at home with their family.Dad was a moderate oilman and we were well-off, but not THAT well-off. We were always invited to things as “fillers,” which was nice but we were not allowed to get serious with the girls. I had this explained to me in great detail by a mom who had grander things planned for her daughter. Basically we were top-of-the-line Fords and were allowed to park down the street from the Cadillacs.
I’ll admit that my honey is old-fashioned. He’ll do major cleaning like washing down the walls but the children and I do the daily cleaning. I moved out a few years ago so I no longer clean his house but I do still make his plates if he eats at my house or something like that. I also made his plate at our son’s graduation party.
Yep, nothin’ so refreshing as hangin’ out in the garage with the door wide open, lettin’ in Crustwood’s aromas & mosquitoes and sounds of traffic passin’ by, while they veg out in the “good” lawn chairs and have guy talk amongst the power tools and piled up kitchen/bathroom supplies. A real treat!!
Just a thought, dressing up for “dinner parties” was nice, but not having to wear a girdle, stockings and a dress with 4 petticoats and a tight waist is nicer! And I give dinner parties all the time, in the dining room, with dessert, Nobody wants liqueurs anymore.
