Ralph: Good morning, Chester! How's it going? Chester: Not so good, Ralph. You know how a balloon is always drawn with a little rectangle there to make it look shiny? I'm having trouble making it look right! Ralph: Gee, that's too bad. Nobody really cares abut the problems of a cartoonist!

I’ve been there, Chester. I’ve been there.

Since those rectangles were usually drawn in four sections, I always assumed it was supposed to be the reflection from some window. I was always amused when a balloon or bubble would still have that window reflection even when the scene was outdoors.

The term for that in cartoon jargon is “lucaflect”. On windows they’re traditionally four-paneled; in the eye of a character they result in the famous “pie-slice” effect..Other words specific to cartooning are “grawlix”, “plewd” and “briffit”.

I’ve certainly never given that much thought to the little rectangle on a balloon. I didn’t know cartoonists had so many problems. I’m attempting to feel your pain. I always thought the hard part was making it funny. I’ve learned so much here myself.

That’s easy, just curve the lines of the little box to the right a little bit to give it a spherical look.
