I almost always made my costumes. One year my sister, who had a sewing machine, made me a cat costume. I wanted to be a black cat, but my mother vetoed that & bought me leopard-print material. It was a great costume – complete with stuffed tail – and for a long time after Halloween I would wear the costume as pajamas, as they had “feet”.
Can think of three bought costumes I wore – Alvin (as in & the Chipmunks), a skull, and a hippie. My folks did have to improvise baby and soldier costumes for my sister and I when we couldn’t find the skull and her costume – I had put them in a window as decorations, hidden from interior view by curtains. My first year in Cub Scouts the October theme was pirates, so everybody home-made a pirate costume. Have been putting my own together ever since, sometimes with purchased pieces like the mouse ears, noses, and tails we used last year to go as Basil and Dr. Dawson from “The Great Mouse Detective.” Planning to reuse them as Bernard and Bianca from “The Rescuers” this year.
