Ddyment….only “poor English” if puns are poor English…. and if they are, Heaven help me!
Frazz has an amazingly good grasp of the language… he has a secret career as a songwriter of note (pun)
(and also cause for suspension of disbelief, in true comic strip fashion, about the maintenance of his janitorial job.)(another pun, BTW. No, I don’t usually label them…. it just seems appropriate)
Anyway…. when roll is called, students usually say “Present!”
I’m not exactly sure whether Mr. Burke is allowing the kids to call out their gift wishes, instead, or if it’s just a little joke in his mind, to picture Christmas gifts when they say “present”….
But Frazz is definitely making a pun… “Here! Here!” instead of “Hear! Hear!” because the students are present.
Kinder… that’s also why they’re gifts, not sugar plums.
I’m probably the massiest of those masses, so I really appreciate the education I get from commenters like SusanSunshine, etal. I can appreciate the comic more, too, if I GET it. :-D

Hey, Frazz. Where, where? Those should actually be sugar plums, not wrapped gifts, dancing in their wee little heads!

Is that girl in the center wishing for Jack Daniels?

So is this a hidden clue to why Frazz is a janitor poor English)? Or do comic strips not get proofread? Or am I missing a subtle joke?

So the kids are presenting their presents in advance?
StratmanRon almost 9 years ago
Not exactly, whiteheron. Please re-read Susan’s excellent explanation. Happy holidays, all!

When a teach calls roll students normally say “here” because of Christmas they answered with “present” instead.

These levels are even more preposterous than the ones Kramer was going to have in his apartment.

Aside from your “…to the masses” phrase, I totally agree with you. Deck us all with Boston Charlie….

I wasn’t explaining because I thought anybody was “beneath” me in understanding..I merely threw in my take on it because somebody asked.
Sometimes I’m the asker, myself. We’re all in this together…
Thanks and/or you’re welcome, to those who liked what I wrote…next time it might be your turn…Meanwhile…please…can’t we have a Christmas truce??

Got it; thanks. My “copy editor” mode had overridden my ’pun parser".
