I figure that the real Diogenes was just demonstrating how hard it is to find an honest man. Maybe he should’ve expanded his search to women. Or children, who are often honest to a fault.
The way I heard it, Diogenes took a lantern and a ladder and went wandering through the world in search of an honest man. Years later he ran into an old friend who asked him how his search was going. “Well, I still have the lantern,” was his reply. 8^)
