I never could understand why the Sunday strips go off in a different direction from the daily strip plot lines.

The Sunday strip is seen by more folks than the daily one, so they tend to be self-contained. This particular one is a bit more sentimental and loving, whereas the daily ones tend to favor more zany wackiness.
