’tain’t easy in the battle of “having two best friends”

Anne can’t really call Elly a best friend when she sends her kids over to play at Elly’s without calling in advance to find out if it’s ok…

You can have two ‘best friends’. Best friends are closer than a normal friend, just hanging out together quietly is just as fun as a rowdy party for three. Normal friends you need to ‘do’ something. Just my opinion….I’ve had two sets of two best friends, one set back home, one set here in the Holy City.

The explanation is simple, Elly is happy that Connie is moving here. In fact, she is quite happy.

My best friend has another best friend, I have to admit I feel a little jealous and awkward about it. My daughter also has two best friends and one of them sometimes feel left out. So in my experience, someone always feels like Anne in this situation.

I feel sorry for Annie, sitting there, listening to Ellie rave…..think Ellie!! Think before you open that mouth of yours!

And what, exactly, is wrong here? Elly is telling the truth. She and Connie have been friends since college. They have shared life experiences that Anne has not. Elly and Anne are close enough friends that Anne doesn’t feel awkward about sending her kids to Elly’s house unannounced, and I can see why she would consider Elly an “best” friend. But that closeness is on a different level from Elly’s relationship with Connie. It does not preclude Elly from being friends with both of them. They will all be neighbors (as they were before Connie moved), so why couldn’t they all be friends?

Anne, I hear ya…I don’t know how many girl friends I considered my best friends only to hear them talk about others as their best friend so I just don’t use that term except with my husband and daughter.

Had a friend I considered my best friend and was even named their eldest son’s godmother. But she didn’t consider me her best friend. I have a best friend now who considers me as a sister and I consider her to be my sister.

This clearly resonates with many of us. Of course, nobody really SAYS what Annie says in this one, but we’ve all felt it before. And again, nobody is “wrong” in this comic, but they are all human and this pain is part of humanity (for the record, I’ve almost never had a best friend either)
