The movie was a fictionalized account of a researcher who determined that the wolves of the Canadian Arctic were eating mice as a large part of their diet and not responsible for caribou depopulation as many were claiming.
The real life researcher was Farley Mowat, eponym for the dog in For Better or For Worse – both were big and shaggy. He was primarily a writer and conservationist, declared persona non gratia by the US to prohibit his attending the US premier of one of his award-winning plays. Also, more accurate in his depiction of wolves than those who base their arguments on Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm!

If it is just mice they get, wolves do eat mice. Even the big ones (wolves, I mean…).
