Bernice: "Pir – oh.
Gunther: “Oh, no…”

Bernice does not look unhappy to see Gunther, even though she wanted to see Piro.
Templo S.U.D. over 8 years ago
Again, Bernice’s plan to be with Piro is already going south thanks to Hair unexpectedly showing up and Gunther “also unexpectedly” showing up.
Argythree over 8 years ago
Other than the scruffy beard, I don’t understand how Bernice could have been looking straight at Gunther and still thought that he was Piro….
gromit82 over 8 years ago
We know that Bernice has Piro on the brain, but she’s looking right at Gunther. I would have thought she could avoid calling him Piro.So who’s the next person to come into the room and have Bernice greet them as “Piro”?
Wilde Bill over 8 years ago
I wonder if Gunther heard the disappointment in her voice.

Tiffany?
LOL!

True! I still suspect that he’s a bum, and would jump at free food, but lately I’ve been thinking he could be an ex-con, with his dislike of noise & not seeming to be around many people.
Argythree over 8 years ago
-But Piro told Bernice he’d see her at the movie.
Probably when he does show up, she will be trying to push Hair off the love seat and talk Gunther into leaving. All that loud noise will encourage Piro to leave (he’s the guy who appreciates silent movies because he likes quiet…)
luann1212 over 8 years ago
You know actually Gunther looks really nice with the way he is wearing his hair, and being clean shaven. No more green, nerd shirt either; he is a nice-looking, intelligent young man. He should have Bernice’s babies eventually, although of course there is always Rosa, and some would hope Tiffany. On Tiffany I think she is seriously trying to help foster this romance for no more than good reasons. Gunther has helped her emotionally and in school, and she is very grateful for that. Her romantic interest remains to be seen in my mind. Whether Rosa comes back or not is lost in Luannverse, but if this turns out the way I think and hope it will, then that would be a Luannverse curve.

Piro said Nosferatu was his favorite. Which means he’s seen it. Maybe he’s never seen Barbarella and decided to check it out.

Take something back: Gunther still has a beard contrary to what I said in my main comment. My other comments remain.

Traditionally, Bernice has had great trouble with unpredictability. In NYC she began to enjoy it, but needed encouragement. Piro could challenge her if that is one of his core characteristics. For Bernice such a person would expand her horizons and increase her self-confidence, but only until she has reached her limit with unpredictability.
SukieCrandall Premium Member over 8 years ago
Go Comic hung, so i will see if lets me finish here:For Bernice, Gunther is the poster child for predictability, for a past she does not want to return to. She is at a point in life where she wants some social challenges, and might want intellectual challenges
bravechow over 8 years ago
Piro is a head-on-a-stick. Lame character. No development there. Time to write him out. Let him vanish.
SukieCrandall Premium Member over 8 years ago
And Go Comics hung again…Bernice and Gunther therefore woukd make a bad couple at this time...Sorry about paragraphing wrong. No choice w the communication difficulties w GC...Tiffany seems to want a predictable, somewhat malleable, caring young man right now. She, meanwhile, coukd introduce Gunther to a world of wisdom on socializing, one he barely knows exists and unwisely does not yet respect. So, each would be good for the other right now.

@Emmet Wayne: I have heard of tone deaf, but it usually refers to singing. Can Bernice not tell the difference in ANYONE’s voice???<br@Trilogy: She looked up with EXPECTATIONS. And we have no way of knowing one way or the other if the 2 sound similar.Perhaps the problem lies in not understanding what the Evanses are doing here. This is in the style of Opera Buffa – chock full of romantic schemes and comic misunderstandings, none of which are, strictly speaking, all that realistic. What IS realistic are the amorous feelings and general emotional tension that Gunther and Bernice display. For oppressive realism and high stakes, you want Opera Seria – not my cup of tea.

6Interesting, but anticipated in regards to the arrival of Gunther.Thoughts and concerns:1. I hope that Greg continues to develop the relationship between Piro and Bernice. I think it would be very interesting a) to learn more about Piro, b) have Bernice interact much more with a new character (yes, she has done that with Dez, and I think that has been fun too), and c) to have Piro be more of a regular character…. all the while remaining somewhat mysterious (might be hard to pull off, but I suspect Greg could do that well).2. I worry a bit that Greg may have in mind for Bernice and Gunther to start dating, and I think IMO that would be far less interesting as a story arc than Bernice being involved with Piro. So, I hope that is not how Greg is planning the story arc.3. I also worry a bit more now that Greg IS planning on keeping the Tiffany-Gunther friendship strictly platonic. For me, a potential of a budding relationship for those two together (such “seemingly” opposite folks finding ways they are good togehter) was very interesting and intriguing. I am thinking though that perhaps Greg is having the relationship ebb and flow and gradually build up… at least that is my hope.4. Now that Hair has returned to the comic, it would be very enjoyable to have him develop beyond the very minimal character he has been thus far. I hope Greg is considering this.5. Perhaps with Hair returning, we may also have a return of Viper and Sun? That would be quite enjoyable too. I hope Greg is considering this.

So who will be Knock-ing on the door next? Bernice needs to think on her feet with this situation after Piro and who knows who else shows up — Orlok the door.

Trying to imagine how Gunther will react to finding Hair lying on the couch.(Especially since I was figuring Hair would fall asleep and start snoring) Will he assume that Bernice is now involved with Hair?
Will Bernice try to get both of them to leave?
This is why I like mysteries….

NG I go by what I’ve seen & the little we know about Piro, when I have more info I could be right, wrong, or somewhere in the middle. As for your statement that you don’t think prison would leave someone “shell shocked” perhaps you should talk to someone who has done time.
Terminal Frost Premium Member over 8 years ago
as far as not knowing Gunther’s voice from Piro, I still maintain that she is either on a ‘hair-trigger’ as far as her expectations, or they might sound the same. I am sure she is not portrayed s unable to tell the difference. I submit the former is more likely.
Terminal Frost Premium Member over 8 years ago
He scooted down? really? You are smarter than that!
Luanaphile over 8 years ago
If Bernice is committed to scheming to be in the love seat with Piro, she has another possible play left. She can announce to everyone in the showing room that Silent Movie Night is canceled, but they can still make it Barbarella. Any cockamamie reason will do. Then she informs each new arrival turning them all away, except for Piro of course, who, I suspect, will be the last to show. This won’t work either, but at least it’s a ridiculous scheme.
Schrodinger's Dog over 8 years ago
come to think of it, shouldn’t that big overstuffed whatever-it-is in the 3rd panel be green, not blue? It looks like the ones that are part of the loveseat.
lattiee2 over 8 years ago
IMO, I bet Tiff and Piro are the only ones who are going to show to Dez movie while Bernice will get the whole lot of people to her movie and then when Bernice ask Piro why he didn’t come to the movie she was showing he more likely could had said he saw that it was crowded and don’t like crowds or that the movie Dez was aiing was more a favorite to him than what Bernice was airing .

Do. Not. Feed. The. Animals.
SukieCrandall Premium Member over 8 years ago
Oh, my goodness, my concern for the clueless animal has me so choked up that i can barely express myself. I had better make it a broccoli stem salad, some parboiled collards sauted w ginger root and garlic in olive oil, some tea eggs or an egg tartine w tarragon and chive blossoms on whole wheat bread, all followed by a Blenim’s Old Number Nine ginger beer which coukd eat through concrete. Beggers can’t be choosers, so the combo leaves a lot to be desired.

A week or two ago, somebody commented that they didn’t think the characters in this strip lied, or made some other comment about whether the characters ever told lies.Well, in this strip, Bernice is lying when she says that she didn’t know that Piro likes silent films. That may not be an important lie, and I’m not bringing it up to condemn Bernice, but if you are looking for examples of a character lying, here you go.

I think in war you usually have some people on your side. Inside you are on your own, in a place where you have to be on your toes 24/7, and usually it is the gangs calling the shots. I read your statement.

Why do you do this?
I have come to the conclusion that these commenters who post without any knowledge of the past strips have an inflated sense of their own intelligence, importance, and worth..Obviously we are supposed to bow down before them and say “Why, of course! Greg and Karen have no idea how to do this comic strip! Your ideas are so much better than the ones they are using!”.Of course, the problem is that these posters are so wrapped up in their own lives, they fail to realize that this strip has existed for longer than they even knew there was a comics section in the newspaper..Which is to say that I find their behavior and posts to be very juvenile.Argythree over 8 years ago
SPOILER ALERT!!!
I thought I knew how this would end, but I couldn’t have pictured this. Three’s a crowd, Bernice…
Argythree over 8 years ago
What I figured would happen is that Gunther would get made when he saw Hair and storm out, running right into Piro. And he’d tell Piro not to bother going in because Bernice was with Hair…
But this is even funnier…
