Frazz by Jef Mallett for August 06, 2016
Transcript:
Boy: My mom's signed up for a 5k next month and she's really, really nervous. Caulfield: Tell her so is Frazz. Boy: Why would Frazz be nervous about a 5k? Caulfield: Because his 5k is technically a swim. Boy: Technically? Caulfield: His stubborn-to-smooth ratio is still awfully wide.

I don’t get this one. . . .

5K’s (the running kind) still make me nervous. They’re short but they hurt really bad the whole time if you’re trying to go as fast as you can. In longer races the pain is less acute.

Can we please get an explanation for the sports challenged among us?

Googled “stubborn to smooth ratio” and got nothing useful. I am mystified as well. Not by the fact that commenters don’t always get along. Rather, I am mystified by the strip.

OK, I don’t get it either. The 5k run vs. 5k swim is obvious, but what is with the stubborn to smooth ratio? What the heck?

So “His stubborn-to-smooth ratio is still awfully wide” is the same as saying “Frazz is a lousy swimmer?”No wonder I don’t get it either.

Will someone please delete the ego banter and explain the damn strip? Thank you.

It looks like any comments that actually explained this have been deleted. It’s now as mystifying as ever.
