I always thought EB3 was just Jim Meddick’s way of expressing regret for kicking Robotman out of the strip altogether. I guess if Monty can have a different girlfriend each decade, he can have a different robotic companion on similar terms.
If I remember the story correctly, the Robotman creators originally commissioned Jim Meddick to make the strip as a marketing gimmick to help sell Robotman toys, accompanying a Robotman cartoon that was unrelated to the strip. The strip was just “Robotman”, with Monty as a secondary character… then it evolved to “Robotman and Monty”, now, due to licencing issues, Robotman had to go, and it’s just “Monty”. I used to read it, but it got kinda ‘meh’.
I love “Monty”. It’s one of my favorite strips. It has a big cast of characters, and you never know where the story will be. It’s not always focused on Monty. It could be his cat Fleshy, the robot, the time-traveling doctor, Moondog, or Sedgewick and Jarvis. I especially like the Sedgie strips.

If I were Roy, that dog would go on the scrap heap for that.

So, how could one incorporate Popeye into the strip?

I’ve been reading Monty for several years. ♦I’d like to see Rocky and Bullwinkle as guest characters.

Monty – he has his own strip on GoComics (I regularly read it). You would have to go back in the strip a long time to get the joke.
