The piano jingle Chopsticks was written by a 16-year-old girl in 1877! Egyptians made toothpaste with mint, pepper and dried Iris flowers! In 1940, Chicago White Sox shortstop Luke Appling hit 24 pitches into foul territory in a single plate appearance.

Did the lass even know what chopsticks in general are? (I’m feeling “Big” coming on a little bit thanks to that tune.)

Sounds like Luke was trying to be walked.

“Chigago” White Sox? Get back to me when you talk about the New Yark Yankees.

That pitcher had to be getting tired.

New Yark?

It was said that Appling could purposely foul off any pitch. If they wanted to tire out a pitcher, Luke was the man!

That is interesting about chopsticks!

I don’t know anything about baseball, but how many times can you send a ball to foul before be changed for a better batter?

So what happened on the next pitch?

Quote from Luke Appling:
“I started fouling off his pitches. I took a pitch every now and then. Pretty soon, after twenty-four (24) fouls, old Red could hardly lift his arm and I walked. That’s when they took him out of the game and he cussed me all the way to the dugout.”

Did the girl who wrote “Chopsticks” have a name?

I remember when Joe Carter once hit at least 8 straight fouls, possibly closer to a dozen, then hit a homer. :)

Did the Egyptian toothpaste cost more than a dollar per tube? I may be old fashioned but Pepsodent at that price is what I use and I am amazed at the prices of the other 99 brands that take up space in the drug store.

I wonder if that incident inspired the book “The Kid Who Batted 1.000” ?

It was just a rumor, of course, but when I was playing little league ball, we always said 99 fouls was an out.
