Night-Gaunt49Or of spring and rebirth. North American cuckoos are not parasitic, but cowbirds are. There numbers have been greatly reduced due to competition from cattle egrets, which also eat insects stirred up by grazing cattle. Having blown over in a storm from Senegal to Brazil in the late 1930s, these invasives have now covered the hemisphere.

Strange that the call of the parasitic cuckoo is considered a meaning for mentally ill.

The European cuckoos certainly do, the yellow-billed and other North American species have their own nests. The cowbird is the parasitic ones here.
