Did he not sell the books for $2,000? Why not, if it took 18 years to buy them, they are too old to even care about…..

Sorry, I don’t get this. Why is he upset if he didn’t sell the books? Can someone explain, please?

I was such a nerd as a child. I used to sit and read the encyclopedia. We still have a set. They are nearly pristine. More decorative than useful now.

A good encyclopaedia is still a good place to jump start research into a subject, regardless of its age.

For how many years did Joe’s parents shelve those books with the spines facing inward? How did they know which volume was which?

The Internet or a CD may be handy, but you want something glued down or held up, you can’t beat a set of encyclopedia.

I’ve been culling out my bookshelves for years. Still holding onto a few that we just can’t part with, but got rid of the encyclopedias many years ago. The hardest part is figuring out where to donate old textbooks. If someone had offered me $2000, I’d have taken it in a heartbeat!

I would have taken the $2000, bought a new encyclopedia set on the internet, and saved the rest of the money in the kids’ college fund.
The kids will never touch these, they can find everything they need on the internet and the information won’t be at least twenty years old, maybe older.

A full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica (32 Book Set) (Hardcover) is about 500 bucks on a popular retail site. Joe, you should’ve taken the 2000 and bought a set from said site. Do the math!

I encountered a situation like that. I waited for the gift givers to pass on and then went to eBay.

@car2ner…. I guess my friend nds and I were “nerds” too. I remember reading the ones in my basement for hours. In the early 80’s, they were from the 70’s. We found them very cool.

I hadn’t thought of those in Years! What year would they be from?1950? 1960? newer? There may be collectable, to some people who have big houses, If the grid goes down or something takes out the internet, there may be valuable info in them.

Three-quarters century of National Geographics (plus index) work as well and on the balance, more accurate than the Internet.

I believe it’s “Britannica”, not “Brittanica”
