Squirrel: Yoo-hoo! I'm having trouble cracking this walnut! I'd like you to fly straight up and dive beak-first into this shell!
Bird: Raise the walnut and shield your eyes.
Squirrel: I truly appreciate this!
This strip must be set in California. How many walnut trees do you have in YOUR neighborhood? (I’ve lived in New York, Mass., Tennessee and Maine and nary a one…)
Depends on what you mean by walnut. I live in Connecticut and Black Walnut trees are everywhere, also butternuts, which are a kind of walnut. English walnuts are very rare here. But none of them have nu ts that look like what those squirrels carrry around.
Definitely have a bunch out here in Cali. The crows love them and throw them down on the roads. A lot of the nuts don’t crack when they hit the pavement but the birds know they will when the cars run over them. Kind of messy, and you have to watch for the brave/stupid crows that are more interested in the feast than moving out of the way of vehicles.
Black walnuts can most easily be found in rows, three sides of a square, where they were planted around a long gone farm house. My parents put black walnuts in the driveway and let the car crack them. They also had permission to pick hickory nuts (which do not taste at all like Grape Nuts), and a major pecan orchard. They also grew bull nettle (seeds used like pecans in pies).

There should be a fifth panel with the bird flying off with the nut in his claws.

For the nut supply, we have far more pecans than walnuts; but the most abundant form of nuts are in Austin with the state government.
