Going to the banned book ceremony Thursday. books against slavery (Huckleberry Finn), war (Slaughterhouse Five), and social interaction (Lady Chatterley’s Lover) will be read by local celebrities. Used to be getting “Banned in Boston” guaranteed a bestseller. Now you just need a fruitcake preacher in Fl. with a match. Oh yeah, Fahrenheit 451 was banned.
I think Fahrenheit 451 might raise a few eyebrows because it comments on censorship, particularly book burnings… ironically a favorite means of disposal for parents and concerned people who don’t like their children folk being exposed to ideas they (the p.c.p.’s) aren’t comfortable with.
While I make it a point to buy the odd book that has hit a few “banned” lists (possibly saving them from a firey demise), it also compels me to protect such brilliant authors as Glenn Beck.
I question whether Glenn Beck can be called an author. There’s more to that than just getting your name on the book’s cover. One actually has to write the book to be its author. Beck gets others to write for him and he’s not smart enough to choose ghost writers with any talent.
As for To Kill a Mockingbird being racist, apparently white racists think accurate, and therefore necessarily very unflattering, depictions of their kind constitutes racism.
Huck Finn, The Color Purple and ‘Mockingbird have all been basically banned for accurately representing history in that place and time. Language, racism, etc.
Heaven forfend that we should educate people about history and whitewash the whole thing…
To respect truth in publishing, we should also require politicians and celebrities to publish the name of the ghost writer. Oh, throw in a couple (I’m not naming anyone) of best selling authors who are to busy to write their own books. I would still stick my hand in the incinerator to save those lousy books.
MobyD, the irony of white racists complaining that books such as “To Kill A Mockingbird” are racist is that they complain that other people call themselves victims, then loudly claim the mantle of victimhood for themselves.

It’s racist to mention race. Today’s literature must be race, gender, ability, health, nationality, and creed neutral.

Fahrenheit 451? Because of its unfavorable depiction of fire? Does Dandelion Wine promote alcoholism?

@steverino answered your question from yesterday- go back in time!
You know - I love to read, and I have never read Mockingbird - must correct this
Digital Frog about 14 years ago
Not to mention the Mexican edition - Tequila Mockingbird…

@celecca– I was thinking of the state, and particularly C O’Donnell and her bugaboos, as to why have a life-sized cutout of X in your house.

For real ? Does this school board teach that the world is flat or that the earth is less than 7000 years old ?
