Poncho: Wait, if the universe is going to rebel against my effort to be kind, we need to define just what kindness really is. For instance, does an act of kindness still count if you do it to feel good about yourself? Is it invalidated if you brag about it afterwards? What if you help somebody who's a bad person? What if you donate money that you got by cheating on your taxes? Universe: What an exhausting little dog.

I’ve found that being generally honest and genial allows me to ignore most of these conundrums without fear.

See, dogs are so stupid. Otherwise they’d just figure out that if Poncho just goes back to being his normal self – because he doesn’t give a rat’s patootie about the universe – then he’s not sparing the universe out of kindness, he’s doing it out of selfishness.

Right, Awgie…. I was just coming in here to ask why Poncho cares about any of that…
He’s already got carte blanche to go back to being a jerk…. so he won’t be performing any acts of kindness for the right or wrong reasons…. and especially not to feel good about himself.
The only thing I could think of is that maybe he’s worried about accidentally doing something nice, even though his motives are selfish, and having it throw the universe off balance again….
But that hasn’t happened before so why let such an outside chance worry him now.
I can’t see it keeping him awake at night.
