Chickens can be driven into a frenzy by a spot of red against a non-red background (for instance, a spot of blood appearing on the opponent of a fighting rooster). So when the traffic light is red, the chicken’s natural urge is to rush headlong into the intersection and attack whatever it sees.
By putting up signs which explicitly state when it’s safe to cross and when it isn’t, the hope is that the rational centers of the chicken’s brain will override its instinctual responses, and reduce road fatalities…
“…the hope is that the rational centers of the chicken’s brain will override its instinctual responses”? It’s hard enough getting the rational centers some people’s brains to do that!

Don’t do it! Wait until the road is in a better mood.

In a topsy-turvy world, even the traffic lights are upside down.

Uh, oh….does this have anything to do with ‘why did the chicken cross the road’? In this situation…will it get safely to the other side?

It is obvious that the question is not “why did the chicken cross the road”, But “when did it cross?.
