If I were Elly and saw barn dogs in the house and they were scratching and biting themselves like these dogs are, I would think that one of the Cruikshank family Christmas traditions was dealing with fleas, ticks, and mites. You can practically see something flying around that one dog in panel 2. I am with Elly on this one. Those dogs and cats will do just fine in the barn.
Between the barn odor, the lack of running water due to frozen pipes and the toilet on a bucket; this farm family has a lot of cleanliness issues.
Our dogs always participated in Xmas and even had their own gifts to open (and they did too, once they smelled the treats inside). of course a good bath before hand is always a good call. I hope those farm dogs have holiday flea collars coming from St. Nick.
Appears that, if Elly’s childhood Christmases were like this one, the tradition did not last long with her. Wonder if she enjoyed her childhood Christmases.
This strip reminds me of a Christmas we spent at my aunt and uncle’s farm. Those two, their 4 boys, my parents, my brother, me, another aunt and uncle, 4 collies, assorted barn cats, and cows, chickens and pigs. It was a fun Christmas.

Someone help the poor dog – it’s miserable with fleas. Have a heart.

They’re desecrating the tree, all right!

Elly forgot it’s not her house for a minute! Her normal house rules don’t apply!

I’m surprised the Pattersons never had a pet kitten or cat. Lynn must not be a cat lover……. her loss, if true.

Wow, their hosts are very laid-back people, aren’t they? I’m more of the structured type. I’d visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. Kids would!

In the winter, our cats have one place they belong; in my lap, but they have to be purring.

I think I would have run (not walked) home on the first day there!
