    Good morning™, escalators!

Another great close-up in the last panel. “Shiyaki” definitely sounds Japanese.

Either Topper expects to make a quick killing or this job is merely part of a bigger operation that will be run from Central City………

I got a feeling that everyone who reads this is looking up Skiyaki, just to see what it means. Just like me.

All I found was a Japanese “FanTech” business site. Oh, well, I’m glad that Kato is doing well.

Ugh, if “Skiyaki” is just a contracted form of “Sukiyaki”, I’m just going to presume that Misters Stanton & Curtis were being ironic. It fits though because the song known as “Sukiyaki” was popular in the early 60’s though a few years before the Green Hornet TV show. It’s also an example of the limited view of Asian culture of the time. The actual name of the song was “Ue wo muite, aruko” which means “I look up when I walk”, a song about sadness and pride (the singer is looking up so his tears don’t fall) but was given the “Sukiyaki” name as one of the few Japanese words familiar to Western audiences. It’s like calling Sinatra’s “My Way” the “Hamburger” song.

If “skiyaki” doesn’t mean anything, why is it a company’s name? I get something called “Skiyaki Ticket” and another site advertising concerts.

So Kato is cleverly disguised as an Asian manservant for Topper? Brilliant! Nobody will ever suspect that he is actually an Asian manservant for Britt Reid!

Catching up today. I was on jury duty yesterday and the judge would not allow us to use our cell phones even when we took a break. So I couldn’t read the strip. Then this morning the site was offline.

I hate the term “politically correct,” but Joe & Mike are skating on some thin ice here. It isn’t 1933 anymore.

“Skiyaki” (which in my recollection, being Japanese-less, is how I read that sukiyaki should be pronounced), Kato in disguise doing for Topper what in his Real Life he does for Britt Reid, has become trusted enough that Topper does not hesitate to share his inmost thinking. That makes Kato a perfect plant, as long as he doesn’t blow his cover, and gives the Green Hornet an unsurpassed edge on Topper in their rivalry, in Central City or abroad (such as in Tracyville)….

Kato is lighting Topper cigars. And here I thought the Hornet always used non-lethal weapons on his enemies.
