I think the biggest problem with the clergy making decisions isn’t that they are few in number, but that they live in a clerical bubble and only talk to other clergy.
Jesus, as I read about him in the Bible, got “down and dirty” with everyday people. If he were around today, he’d probably visit a church or two like he visited the temple (and that experience didn’t go down well), but I don’t think you’d find him hanging out there. I’d look for him helping the cashier bag groceries at the market chatting with the customers or maybe in the park talking with homeless people.
Somewhere in the middle ages, the clergy became a caste somewhere between the nobility and the peasantry. Many of them have not seemed to have made it down off that pedestal yet.
Danflak, that separation of the clergy/laity happened at the time of Constantine the Great. In Judaism, it happened with the Pharisees and Saducees; they, too, despised the common folk.
The real problem is that half of that 99% are women! And you know how they are! On second thought, that bunch of sour old men have NO idea how women are.

Pope Francis gets out among the laity so he has a better grasp and more understanding of their situation.

In the Bible, Jesus or his Hebrew name Joshua, will be the one riding the White horse of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. That should be interesting.
