Back in the 1950s – 1960s my brother and I went to a pediatrician who would do something like this while giving kids their shots. While we were engrossed in watching her examine the office Teddy bear, the nurse would sneak up and give us the vaccines so quickly that we almost never felt it.
I mentioned this in comments yesterday, but maybe today is more appropriate. I am a supporter of the Fairchild Society, which is a private organization that pays for dentistry for special needs children. They are allied with the better known Shriners Hospital.

Since Lynn Johnston made so much on a strip about her dentist husband, I would imagine she is quite familiar with and supportive of this charity.
My hospitals periodically have “Teddy Bear Hospital” events where kids can bring their toy animals and painlessly experience the ER process through them.

The special joys of pediatric dentistry — you never have to worry about your teddy bear getting cavities or needing a root canal.

If only they taught more of that than how to keep checking the clock and how to bill for proceedures.

I wish I knew more men who liked children. I need to expand my field of male acquaintances.

There was a recent news article where a surgeon stitched up his patient’s Teddy bear’s torn arm before the actual surgery on the boy.
