Better pray Heart herself doesn’t fit in the locker (I mean, Calvin once stuffed himself into his locker, but that was to put on his Stupendous Man outfit so Stupendous Man would vicariously take Calvin’s test).

The other kids are probably much better at hiding their insecurities, Heart.

Where is Dean? He can come to the rescue.

I seem to identify with Heart here. Most people seem to know what it is all about and I’m standing there without a clue.

My junior high/middle school was on an air force base in England and was comprised of a “campus” so my english lit class was in a different building than math and science. For lunch we could choose to go to the main cafeteria (it’s own building) or we could eat at the snack stand that served hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers, chips, candy, etc. (cash only so meal tickets could only be used at the cafeteria). Art and music classes were so far across campus that we got an extra 5 minutes after the late bell to get to class. P.E. class was on another end of campus. It was a lot like college. That was the scariest first day of my entire life. I was used to elementary school with one building that housed everything now I was tasked with having to memorize which buildings had which classes in them. Oh and these buildings were at least 2-3 stories tall. Fun times!

You can tell who the ones moving from grade school to next level and middle school (of whatever name) to high school, by the dazed, deer-in-the-headlights look as they look from their schedule sheet to door numbers,up and down the halls. the first two or three days of school.

When I first started teaching Middle School. Coming from elementary, the other teachers explained that the 6th graders were the “babies”-still playing on the playground and needing lots of guidance and direction. 7th graders were, in their words, “brain dead”-no learning will take place because their bodies are changing and confusing the heck out of them-girls are moody, crying one day and wanting to be left alone the next, the boys are just stunned by these little girls now taller than they are and popping out all over the place. 8th graders were “raging hormones”-over the summer, the boys grew 10 feet, taller than some of their teaches, and both genders now want to be treated as the adults they think they are. Crazy but in the end, a lot of fun.

I remember going from eighth grade to freshman year high school. What a shock, going from being biggest of the small to smallest of the big.
