I generally say “could be worse”. It throws people off a bit, and they usually laugh, while edging away.
Growing up I used to hear “fair to middling”. Not so much anymore.

Yeah, truth in advertising has never been our strong suit.
The truth is, no one wants to hear or be sidled with a stranger’s problems so it became en vogue to just say, “Good, and you?” in order avoid the awkward conversation of having to explain why they answered, “It’s going horribly…just awful.”
