I once had a pet pigeon. My dad was a construction worker. Work his crew was doing displaced a pigeon’s nest, so he brought the baby pigeon home. We hand fed it until it was ready to fledge. We said our goodbyes, gently tossed it into the air, and it flew up and landed on my head. Apparently it had imprinted on us. It stayed around our house and would land on our shoulders or head just as we were going into the house. Several times, it followed me all the way to school by flying alongside the school bus and resting on the utility wires when the bus would stop to pick up new passengers. Once I went inside the school building, it would fly home. We always thought Foo Foo was a boy until he laid a nest of eggs in the garage rafters the next spring. The babies all fledged and left home, but Foo Foo stayed for about three years. Then she just disappeared. We never knew if she finally realized there was a whole world out there, or if something bad happened to her.
Strangely enough, our dogs and cat never tried to harm Foo Foo. They would go exploring together in the farm fields two doors down. Sometimes Foo Foo would get a ride on Bobo’s (dog) back.
