None of our dogs went out by themselves, we took them out and living in Rochester NY was “not a fun time in winter”. Once we got the house that was fenced then they went out on their own. Once we moved again the leashes were back out. Place we live now has a fenced backyard so our Buddy got to out there and for walks when it was nice, but even when he went in the backyard we were on the patio watching and then went to pick up after him.
