I don’t recall Billy Joel mentioning the condition of the state owned vehicles there and my entire knowledge of Allentown comes from that song, so I’ll have to take your word for it.
We need to introduce Charlene to SPAAMFAA; the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus of America. She can find LOTS of work for a good mechanic there, helping people to restore their antique fire trucks to pristine condition. www.spaamfaa.org
I find it so strange that cities have to pay for their own fire brigade. In France it is a national organisation, with our taxes paying for all the fire brigades everywhere.

Working on older vehicles is more fun. Less hoses and junk to remove or move out of the way to get to the broken stuff.
