Historians have estimated that the beads used to buy Manhattan Island were worth about $24. If that amount of money had been placed in an account earning 5% interest for the 400 years since that transaction , it would now be $7,176,800,429.97.
Seven billion? Jeff Bezos would sneer at such a paltry sum
Not such an idiot after all! History charts a new course.
The punchline is that the Canarsie tribe, which took payment, never actually lived on Manhattan. Peter Minuit was scammed.
Also that various Indians “sold” the island to lots of white guys. Though it wasn’t theirs to sell. It was used for transactions.
I love the randomness of this strip!
