I subscribe to a number of “geeky” web comics. In one of them this very discussion is going on now.
How much AI would it take before a machine could be considered sentient?
If you had Asimov three-law robots, what direct orders could you give them that would allow them to act like people and have freedom of action even if it violates the second law (A robot must obey all orders from a human except where it conflicts with the first law.).
Ever since the first pda was developed, and people had to ‘obey its rules’ in order to communicate with it and with others like it. Control increased with the development of ‘chat’ services and social media that so involve users they lose contact with their immediate surroundings and walk into walls, fountains, and traffic lanes. They also reduced our ability to choose what we need and what we want to know via apps that use the false label for you to sell us on acceptance of their choices. And yes they also allow us to comment on these comics, the news in general, or to make insulting remarks to other users we don’t know. How good or bad all that is is up to each user’s sense of values.

Today, I have more confidence in the capabilities of robots than in those of our current leaders. CEO or politicians, it doesn’t matter.
