You have to understand that in Milborough, the fictional city where this story takes place, there are strict laws about the places that women are allowed to eat. It turns out that one of the places is at the local hot dog stand. Now that Michael’s friends know that, they want to work at a hot dog stand. If they lived in a normal town, they would not be so impressed that girls eat fast food. They might have even gone to a fast food place and might have seen that girls ate there as often as boys did. But they don’t live in a normal town. They live in a town where the opportunity to work in a food place that serves women is rare and something to be envied. Now they know that Michael is super lucky and has a great job, even though they were acting like jerks and pointing and laughing at him before, because they thought he worked in a place where women did not buy food. They know better now.
My summer job was always in my parents’ jewellery store. My main duty was to dust and wipe fingerprints off the glass counters. I was quite envious of a friend of mine who got a job serving ice cream at one of the malls. She had a cute uniform and was always talking to kids our age. It was a very busy, social place. Later, when I told her how much I wished I’d had her job, she said that after standing all day digging hard ice cream out of the freezer, her back ached, her feet hurt and her arms had never ached so badly in her life! …The grass is always greener on the other side!
They should be working together, such as starting a band where Michael is a construction worker, Brian is an Indian chief, Gordon is a sailor, and Lawrence is a motorbike rider. The name could be something like “The Townsfolk”, “The City Dwellers”, something like that.

I told some of my students, “Don’t tease that person. They might be your boss someday, assuming they hire you.”
