If you want to get a dog to lose weight, diet first by cutting their daily food intake by half, then exercise once they get their weight down closer to ideal. THEN they will run until they drop from exhaustion, being so happy that they can at all.
Joe needs to start slow with Mortimer, both are too fat to run. I and my daughter take 3 dogs for walk, I have indoor skier I work on first and then walk outside, this helps with faster walking outside with the dogs. I am not a runner, yet faster walking is close to running.
