A very real question which we may soon be contemplating is whether some brave volunteer will be sent on what is known to be a suicide mission as the first person to land on Mars without possibility of returning. The solace is that you get to be portrayed in the movie by Matt Damon.

The Petaluma Swim Club (to which my daughter belongs) calls itself the Salty Krakens. What a cool surprise to see the t-shirt in the fourth panel. What an amazing tie-in to the comic. Big thanks Jef!

If one is the only person in the world to see it and then be dragged under, who would know?

I’m disappointed. Doesn’t he know ‘hypothetical’ is from Greek?

Are you sure you would be the first to see the kraken, given that others couldn’t come back to brag about it if they had?

Great strip, except that Caulfield would know perfectly well what ‘hypothetical’ means—and could use it in several sentences.

Good question. Would they make a movie about me? That might influence my decision.

Etymology
The English word kraken is taken from the Swedish2 and Norwegian language.3 Wikipedia
Though for “Clash of the Titans” Poseidon should have said , “let loose the Cetus” which was the creature that was going to eat Andromeda.

You mean “Interesting Architeuthis,” Caulfield (and any connection between Krakens and Squid is a modern invention…)

There is a whole category of religionists who put their lives at low value compared with putting a hurt on “bad people”.
I’d only do it if I were both interested (not much) and had a a diagnosis (that I believed) of death within a short time anyway. Maybe.
