Also, don’t bark up the wrong tree, give up the dogged pursuit, and suchlike, Rod!

Maybe it’s an Alaunt? It’s a dog breed that existed in medieval times and was used to take down big prey. Not sure what they looked like, though. I’m not THAT old!

Mastiffs were also bred for castle guard duty. Several countries had large, heavy-boned dogs bred for that; there are more’s just Alaunts and Mastiffs.

The hand I can understand being chewed up, but the leg? Must be some cheapo metal for Rodney’s leg to be mauled like that!

A fine example of what happens when good leadership meets poor judgement.

It looks like it could be one of the mastiffs, or maybe a Bouvier des Flandres. Many years ago, friends of mine had a Bouvier that weighed close to 150 lbs. That old boy was HUGE.

“Burly and barrel-chested, the tousle-coated dog of Flandres is from a time and place where a dog had to work like … well, a dog. These smart and steady all-purpose workers make excellent watchdogs.”

Possibility a Molossus, which was a Roman Guard dog, the Romans did have a lot of involvement in good ole England.
