I read an old sci-fi story in which long trips through space were known to drive people mad, so the agency sent entire crews of already mentally disordered members. (Not as wacky as it sounds; they were more neurotic than psychotic.)
A Jonny Quest episode from 1964 about solving that problem. By use of a hallucinogenic plant to distill to keep a crew alert for as long as 20 years. Both Dr. Quest and Dr Zin were both hot on the trail for getting it.
