Can some one catch me up? Does that mean Chance was older than all the second graders; or are Charlie and Chance the same age, yet Charlie is now a grade or two ahead of Chance.

That is one weird rake Chet has. In the colorized version, the flat part on the top is solid, yet you can see the handle through it. Quite the odd design. And speaking of odd, today’s Mopped Up Thorp is online:

Probably Chance the Snapper did not kill his parents, but acted out after they died, possibly gruesomely—though somehow only Gil knows for sure—but going opposite the direction of silent John Pascoe.
