Drownings are regular up & down the Calif. coast. People that ignore, or don’t bother to read the signs posted everywhere. Sadly, the victims are mostly teens, out having a good time with their friends.
Treat rip currents with respect, but not fear. If caught, swim parallel to the shore until out, then return the usual way. Surfers call rips “escalators” because they are a quick and easy way to get to where the breakers form. You can spot them by the reduced surf.
