I have noticed that Japanese “Sweets” use only about a Quarter as much sugar as American.
In Colonial America, Sugar was almost worth its weight in gold. In fact, it was Sugar Plantations which made the use of Slave Labor Profitable. Crops like Corn, Wheat & Potatoes are not nearly profitable enough to make slavery worth the expense of importing them.
Cotton did not become profitable until Eli Whitney’s Cotton Gin made separating the Cotton fibers quick & easy. Doing it by Hand was laborious and time consuming before the Cotton Gin making Wool a cheaper option.
But, the early Expense of Sugar meant that, when the costs came Down, Americans began dumping it into Everything because it had formerly been something only the rich could taste.

Is American cereal too powerful for Tanuki? I guess he only likes sugar in his chocolate chip cookies!
