This page wasn’t in the original posted version; it’s new for the published version. It makes the strip where Lorraine walks into the sea a lot less grim.
I’m not sure that this means that Lorraine was a selkie all along. There wasn’t any indication that she had a sealskin, and if she did have one, I think she would have returned to the sea when whoever held it (actual-Ellen’s father, presumably) died.
There are various legends about where selkies come from, and John doesn’t always necessarily strictly follow the folklore anyway, but in at least some of the versions, selkies are formed from the spirits of the drowned. Sasha and “Ellen” were presumably born as selkies, but Lorraine might be a “made” selkie rather than a “born” one.
But in any case, Lorraine is with her selkie family now.
This is the last page of “The Case of the Fire Inside”. Next up, “The Case of the Unwelcome Visitor” (starting with a brief detour through “The Case of the Rock Bottom”).
And so we end “The Case of the Fire Inside”. And with it, I’ll be ending my participation in the comments here. Of late, I’ve been getting the impression that I’m being made to feel rather… unwelcome here. And quite frankly, my mental state being what it is, I just can’t deal with it. So… I’ll be taking the only option available so as to not ruin my appreciation for a comic that’s long been precious to me.
It’s been fun (except for the parts that weren’t), so I’ll take my leave before it’s not any longer.
Initially, and without too much thought, I had assumed she (Lorraine) had it in her little wheelie and is why she took it when she left the house. When her husband died she would have found it and would have been in possession of it.

Sigh… Ellen and the nice elderly woman she called mom are together in the sea. This is the sweetest end possible ♡!

Together again, minus one. Some joy, some sadness. As is Tackleford, so is life.
