Of course he’s joking — they didn’t really have phone books back then, they’d just ring up the operator and say “Sarah, get me the diner.”

Okay, let’s go back to the start.. or nearly to the start.

Here’s the first GA I have that mentions Walt. This is from “The Rectangle”, which was Frank King doing an entire page of various comics, of which I’ve cropped out the Alley panel. The original gang looked to be more like 8 guys, but it mentioned Doc by name at the start, and also has a prototypical Avery and Bill, at least to my eye in the right foreground.

And then two weeks later, I feel I have to include this one just for the “new moon over my left shoulder” bit, heh. (Walt with the overalls and porkpie hat rather than his sailor cap.)

Even the table lamps are scowling over Walt’s nonsensical ramblings.

My Mom – having been one of those small-town telephone operators – would tell you that that last line wasn’t all that far from the truth.

Skeezix’s biological mother was Madame Helene Octave, an opera singer, who’d rather give up motherhood for her career which was rather selfish. Wealthy widow Phyllis Blossom turned out to be her sister, as we learned many years later after her death. Auntie Blossom really was Skeezix’s biological aunt after all.
