Is the message here that Elly serves John the same food as Farley. or that Farley does not get to eat until everyone else in the house eats, or that when it’s Elly cooking her famous yellow sludge casserole no one is eating well?
It is a running gag that Elly is a lousy cook and is living in the shadow of her mother, example being an old strip where she was cleaning out the refrigerator.
Elly looks at a food package
Elly{talking to herself}: “Heaven knows how long this has been sitting here.”
Elly opens up food container and acts like she just went into the restroom of a public library
Elly: “Ugh, that smells like Michael’s room.”
Elly puts everything in a trash bag
Elly: “Even though this food is rotten, moldy, and unfit for human consumption, I still feel guilty throwing it out….”
Elly: “My mother would have made it into a casserole.”
Even though in our home, we never fed our leftovers to our dog… I remember my mother’s husband thought he was treating our dog by sneaking his leftover sliver of bacon or saussage, and the dog of course took it, but then about 15 minutes later, or so, she would throw it up… And we told him over and over, not to do it, and he didn’t listen to us…

We had a casserole last night. The Small bear discovered we were out of Quorn chicken chunks so used Quorn sausage instead. And very tasty it was too.

You should have dumped that hot casserole in his lap; it would have been less of a burn

Technically you’re not eating alone, John!

My grandmother used to say “If you don’t eat it, I’m just going to throw it away.” So, in other words, grandma, you were trying to feed me garbage?

And if you give that food to the dog, after the next vet visit, Farley will be put on a strict weight diet.

The animals always get fed first. This must be a leftover treat for Farley.

John’s drooling, so it must be good. If it’s good enough for John, it’s good enough for the dog.

The anatomy of a casserole. Classics all around.

Well, that’s not so bad. At least John got his share first.

no! Don’t give the dog people food!

John should be glad that Elly served him first. Pets usually have a higher priority than husbands.

Isn’t that animal cruelty?

This one made me laugh out loud.

I don’t know who looks less enthused about the casserole, John or Farley.

I like the way he has to apologize to Elly for being at work late. It shows the relative importance of things.

Farley looks like he’s saying Grace.

That is very insulting to him. Give half to the dog? What does that make him?

Good enough for John, I guess. But Elly has higher standards.
