Actually, that’s precisely wrong: a simile is a direct comparison, so it uses “like” or “as.” A metaphor effectively assumes or implies a comparison, so it seldom uses “like” or “as.”
I probably wouldn’t have quibbled if he had said “with” instead of “minus.”
