When I was growing up in the 40’ and 50’s in a small town, we had 2 digit phone numbers. Ours was 23. The local phone “central” was staffed by one woman, from about 6 AM to 10 PM (in shifts). Outside those hours, no service. In the early 60’s we got the 7 digit automated service, 24 hours. Then I had to memorize 7 digits to call my friends. Oy!

Those 20th-century phone numbers! B^D (I know, phone numbers like that weren’t in use since, what, 1960?)
