I’ve always wondered why the Mormons set out west, got to the top of the mountain where it’s the coldest, and then decided that would be the best place to live.
Maybe they were told by God how great the skiing would be (once somebody invented skis).
“Not too close to water, grounds kinda hard, neighbors are crowding in… Aw heck, the left lane on the freeway is a good enough place, we’ll settle in here.” Homesteaders. Every. Stinking. Day.
This comic just earwormed me with James McMurtry’s Levelland (not a bad thing, James is awesome and his pandemic facebook shows are the highlight of my year). Same concept, but spelled out over many more minutes and with guitar.
Some time ago, Comcast used Settlers in their commercials. Their lives were so sparse that most of the family used common nouns, (Wife, daughter, boy) rather than proper names. They made the Ingalls look like the Kardashians.

People came from all over the world, looking for a better life in the American west. Here we see the Godunov family, about to claim their homestead.

Gallagher used to say people settled wherever their wagon wheel broke. And that’s why the town center often has a broken wagon wheel in it.
