I was visiting a friend and put my feet up on her coffee table as many had before.
Her mother announced, “In MY house people don’t put their feet on the furniture.”
“Yes, ma’am, and that’s why I am never going to your house; I don’t go where people don’t make you feel welcome.”
She got mad and stomped out the door.
“Wanda, that was all just for her benefit. If you don’t want my feet up, just say so. It won’t bother me. I just figured it was YOUR house to decide such things.”
I remember a page from either Mad or Cracked ( I think it was Mad) and it was one of those “they’ll say it every time” or “everyone has a relative who….” feature which showed am older woman (probably an aunt or grandmother) telling a kid: “Get off of that couch! You will stain the plastic cover I put over it!” I vaguely remember a friend’s grandma actually saying that to us a few days later and I got in a bit of trouble for not being able to suppress a laugh in front of her…….
I commented on this a week or so back (not sure if it was on this strip or not, however): I have heard kids being frustrated at not being able to do things they wanted, and saying “When I have kids, I’m going to let them do whatever they want!”. Yeah, right – see how that will work out!
You can either have nice furniture which is expensive and tell everyone not to put their feet up. You also can’t have pets since cats scratch it and both cats and dogs shed fur on it. You might as well just have cheapo used furniture and let kids and pets enjoy it.
On the subject of shoes on furniture, … As of the time I write this, I see that no commenters on yesterday’s (Saturday) Luann strip have praised Shannon for taking her shoes off before climbing on the chair. (On the other hand, at least nobody has gone on a rant at her about how the Board of Health would shut down a hair salon with barefoot stylists.)

“No, David. Keep them right where they are.”
