So, the storm cellar becomes a slammer (SLAM). Some people have been complaining that we’ve gone a long time without seeing Dick Tracy in this strip, but I really like fact that it’s not just the cliché of Tracy caught in a trap. To me, it’s nice to see something interesting happening that’s not just the routine. I’m sure Tracy will reappear when it’s time for him to track down and nab the wrongdoers.
Very cool! Some of the commune members must be avid Tolkien fans to be constructing a replica Hobbit home in the hillside like that. But without windows it’s more like being lost under the Misty Mountains, so by the time he’s freed will Tiger be rambling about ”where’s my preciousss?”
I just realized – Tiger’s remark that they ’don’t know who they’re dealing with’ implies Pouch is working for the mob. If that’s the case, Aquarius is going to be in very big trouble.
Tiger Lilly’s original story in 1942 introduced Frizzletop (a former Army nurse who lost an arm in combat and was a cousin of Flattop but not criminal like the rest of the family). Frizzletop had been engaged to Tiger Lilly’s brother but the brother was killed in combat. She wanted to track down Tiger to return his mother’s ring and tell him about his brother’s death.
At the time, Lilly was a small-time criminal who sold sound effect recordings to radio programs. He would create the sound effects by causing the real event. If they needed the sound of a man being shot, Lilly would stage the real event. He did these recordings in conjunction with a Radio critic who praised the programs for their realistic and often horrifying sounds while taking kickbacks from the radio stations for bringing them more listeners.
Tracy caught on to this after Lilly staged a train wreck. This was not in Tracyville but a nearby city Tracy was visiting but Tracy took an interest in the case. He was able to trace the scheme back to the critic who panicked and was going to rat out Lilly for causing the wreck. Lilly had his gang kidnap the critic, knocked him out, tied him up and put him in an old deserted tavern, then blew the place up.
That was the first death trap we saw devised by Lilly.
But this was not the only trap in Lilly’s original story so, being put in a trap is just Karma for Tiger Lilly.
During his original story, Lilly tied up Junior and Frizzletop, put them in a rowboat, punched some holes in the boat, and sent them out on the river to sink and drown.
He trapped Tracy and a banker he was trying to con in his underground hideout and turned on a large golf-course sized industrial lawn mower next to the ventilation system feeding air into the hideout. This allowed the carbon monoxide from the exhaust to be fed into the bunker to asphyxiate them.
What is that tune going through Tiger Lily’s mind? " I was thrown into darkness…when they gagged and tied me up….I was ..I was…thrown into darkness…when they gagged and tied me up…humph…what is this place….can’t see nothing in front of my face…being thrown down those stairs hurt…what is my criminal life worth….from being thrown into darkness…ouch.
Great outline of the 1942 Tiger Lilly story, much more interesting than the present mish mash. But, the adventures of Tiger and Aquarius continue, while Dick and Sam guest appear with Dethany somewhere in Toonland.
Tiger Lilly has finally lost his beret, in that fall downstairs into the new (old) dungeon-keep. I’m not sure what its original purpose was (root cellar? wine cellar?), but it is a bleak and frigid place for a defiant prisoner to be softened up, or, literally stiffened up if he should freeze to death….

See wine bottles emptied out. A pizza box forlorn
On a mission. Sent by Pouch. Slip out before the ‘morn.
Cheesecake sleeps as Tiger creeps in search of blue balloon
“Almost too easy,” he does smirk. That notion ends so soon.
Aquarian Age, once all the rage, a memory of times past
Tiger Lilly’s luck runs out. Might this day be his last?
Hammer in hand. Aggressive band. The questioning begins
He’ll tell them what they wish to hear. Confess to all his sins.
Just to avoid some shattered bones. For Pouch he shall not die
Locked away this fateful day, he heaves a heavy sigh.
In isolation, agitation. This is a tight spot
There are two ways about it. He’ll survive or he shall not.

Oh glory be!
Wonderful color my eyes do see!
The plot drags on but I care not a bit
Dick Tracy will always be to me a hit
Even through ridiculous plots
Moronic characters that put me in knots
I’ll always return to the scene of the crime
My love for the strip is more than sublime

Gee. The Trib’s powers that be must have loosened it’s leash. It’s 8 weeks since the story began, and hardly nearer a climax than it was 8 weeks ago.

Pouch will give Tracy a “tip” where he is…..which in turn justifies a warrant this time….the dominoes began falling…

This strip is so much better without Dick Tracy!

The color is back, the story just as sinister, very cool.

Looking at the weather, unless that cellar is well insulated and heated, this guy isn’t going to make it.

The Initiation continues…1-NARKY MARK: Next, you “go in the Box” because “you gotta get your mind right”…
2-…and that means “get your eyes accustomed to wearing sunglasses 24/7…
3-…and for your information, there are two more Initiation tests…
4-…rake out and oil 5 miles of gravel road and…
5-…eat 50 boiled eggs.
