Seriously though, there are wild birds that have to literally drive the fledglings away when they are grown. They’ll sit around cheeping mournfully, hoping to be fed, when they’re as big as their parents.
I like that she writes in those scratch marks used to represent dialogue. It’s as if Charlie Brown’s teacher wrote him a note that read, “WAA WAA WAA WAA…”.
Wow, that’s deep! How many mothers can look at that first panel of little Woodstock bringing his mother a flower on Mother’s day and not let a tear drip out of their eyes when they see the note in the second panel?
was lucky enough to have two moms: there was the woman who raised me as a child and then the same person I got to know as an adult. We needed a couple of years of separation but came back together to reconcile. Both of her were slightly crazy but very nice people.
Like other loved ones I’ve lost, I do not mourn her death, but I do smile when I remember her.
My parents sold our house in Buffalo in 1986 and winterized the cottage that was my dad’s party place after WWII. The first Xmas back my brother and I looked around and asked “There’s no bedrooms for us?”All my dad said was “Right…” Subtle, it wasn’t.
With today’s radical left this comment of Woodstock’s mom could raise a stink from those who sit on their duffs and demand food, shelter, etc from those otherwise wisely raised sons and daughters of moms across the land.
I’ve been keeping tabs on an osprey nest in the parking lot right outside my office for 9 years now.
One year we had one fledgling. Now, you can’t tell the gender of immature ospreys, but the people in our office voted to call it “Charlie”…my hunch was that it was a female, but I was outvoted…
Come next spring, I look out one day, and see THREE ospreys up there! Mom, Dad…and a 2nd female (adult females have spotted breasts). Now, this pair is aggressively territorial, and would always chase off intruding ospreys. Yet that day they calmly tolerated one perched right on the nest with them, like one big happy family…
I simply said, “Welcome home, Charlene” and went about my business.
On this Mother’s Day, let’s remember not everyone was blessed to have had a loving mother in their lives. If you know of anyone whose life has turned out that way, be kind to them today. If you did not have a good mother yourself, I pray you still found happiness in life, and have a blessed Sunday.
I think this strip is Schulz gentle way of acknowledging that sometimes it’s not all roses. At least Woodstock has Snoopy and this may explain why he’s a bit needy at times
We had a brood of birds that built a mud nest near the top of our covered front porch. When the babies got big enough, we saw the mother bird constantly chasing one of the now-grown babies out of the nest, but it kept coming back and defiantly sitting in the nest.
I swear, it had the smug look on it’s little bird face of a slacker child who expects to be fed for life without ever getting a job…
Like an eagle, I spread my wings and flew away. Like a vulture, my younger sister flew back and had mom change her will in order to get 100% of the family estate.

If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, it couldn’t find a job for more than minimum wage.

Thomas Wolfe was right. At least when it comes to the world of… whatever kind of bird Woodstock is.

This comic would be more appropriate on Father’s day. Its dads who abandon their kids, not moms.

Apparently crows are the exception, they continue to get together after the babies have left the nest…for quite awhile.
